SES-V1 ROBOT ARMS DETAILS

The AL5 series, comprise in the SES-V1 Robot Arms, are the 5th generation of Lynxmotion’s hobby robotic arms. Although arms are similar in appearance, the AL5D has the longest reach and heaviest payload capacity, while the AL5A has the shortest reach and lowest payload capacity, but offers a significant price advantage. Variations include the choice of electronics (BotBoarduino or SSC-32U) and software (Arduino vs. FlowBotics Studio), and versions without servos or electronics are available.  

All versions of the AL5 are made from our Servo Erector Set components for the ultimate in flexibility and expandability. The kit consists of black anodized aluminum brackets, Aluminum tubing and hubs, custom injection molded components, and precision laser-cut Lexan components. The motors  used to actuate each joint are from Hitec which provide quality, robust and long lasting RC servos. 

The AL5 robotic arms deliver fast, accurate, and repeatable movement for hobbyist use. Each robot features: base rotation, single plane shoulder, elbow, wrist motion and a functional gripper. The AL5D robotic arm is an affordable system with a time tested rock solid design that will last and last. Everything needed to assemble and operate the robot is included in the kit, with several different software control options.

Hardware options include three different wrist rotation upgrades (lightweight, standard and heavy duty), a simple vacuum gripper (with or without wrist rotation), an IR sensor mount, a V-style gripper and more.

  • AL5B: 15.75” vertical, 13.125″ horizontal, ~5oz max payload
  • AL5D: 16.5” vertical, 19″ horizontal, ~10oz max payload

SSC-32U & FlowBotics Studio 

is an easy to use graphical program which allows you to easily get your AL5 robot up and running without the need to create code. Use the software to manipulate the real arm using the virtual arm, and create, record and play back your own sequences. Software allows for wrist rotation and additional servos. 

SSC-32U & FlowArm PLTW 

FlowArm provides a graphical interface for controlling the AL5A, AL5B and AL5D arms. You can also create and save sequences. It is a stand-alone .exe program which was created using FlowBotics Studio.

SSC-32 Servo Sequencer Utility: a free interface which gives you control over each servo and allows you to create sequences.

Alternately the servo motors can be controlled directly from a microcontroller. We sell the arm without electronics for this purpose.

ALUMINUM STRUCTURE

Durable yet lightweight parts and quality actuators

The servo used at each joint has been chosen specifically to provide optimal weight vs torque, while keeping the price as low. Hitec RC servos have proven to offer excellent value, high quality and last for a very long time. The main brackets are made out of durable aluminum, and for their application, should never break, crack or wear out. The arms can be easily integrated into other platforms, and most Lynxmotion rovers and hexapods can support (and have connection points for) the arm.

MULTIPLE CONTROL OPTIONS

FlowBotics Studio, FlowArm, Arduino

Not only do these kits come in a variety of different hardware configurations, several electronics options are available which allow for different control methods. The SSC-32U servo controller works with FlowBotics Studio and FlowArm software and allows you to control the arm from a computer via a visual drag and drop interface. Alternatively the SSC-32U can be connected to a PC so that you can use it with a software of your choice – the communication protocol is easy to understand and implement. Alternatively, the Arduino-based BotBoarduino microcontroller allows you to create code using the popular Arduino IDE, or add a PS2 remote control and use the sample code to operate the arm without the need to be connected to a computer.

The AL5 series robotic arms use high quality, long-lasting Hitec RC servo motors at each joint. Each servo was selected to provide the necessary torque while minimizing weight.
