| About the Phoenix Hexapod Walking Robot The Phoenix Hexapod Robot has a more natural looking, more articulate leg and body design. The three DOF (degree of freedom) leg design means this robot can walk in any direction! The robot has been designed to use 18 Hitec HS-645 servos for the legs. The kit includes everything you need to build the robot mechanics with the exception of 6 x ASB-04 pairs. In addition you will need Servos, Electronics and Batteries. The mechanical design was inspired by Kåre Halvorsen who goes by Zenta on our forum. This is quite possibly the nicest looking, best performing, commercially available hexapod out there. The Mechanics The robot is made from waterjet cut 6061 T6 aluminum components that are either bright dip Blue or Red anodized or jet black anodized. The Tibia and Femur parts are made from 0.125" thick material, and the chassis parts are made from 0.063" thick material. Note, this robot, as cool looking as it is, does not have the payload carrying capability of the other hexapods available from Lynxmotion. There is a penalty for pivoting the joints on the servo output shaft alone. Controlling the Robot The Phoenix robot is a complex walker. We have pre-written programs available for PS2 control using the SSC-32, Bot Board II, and BASIC Atom Pro. Programs and instructions are available in the Complete Phoenix Tutorial. A list of required components is included in the tutorial. Alternately, it can be controlled with our Visual Sequencer (SEQ-01), but it can be tedious to create large sequences for so many servos. Kåre Halvorsen has written a program to automate the process of creating complex sequences. His work has been outlined here. Jeroen Janssen (Xan on our forum) has submitted some very impressive BASIC Atom Pro code for Phoenix PS2 control, available here. Powering Options The robot is compatible with the following batteries and chargers. Chargers > NiCad & Ni-MH Universal Smart Charger (USC-01) Batteries > 6.0 Volt Ni-MH 1600mAh Battery Pack (BAT-03) > 6.0 Volt Ni-MH 2800mAh Battery Pack (BAT-05) Important! To keep costs down we are not providing printed Assembly Guides. They are provided online, so you will need to print them when you order the kits. By providing the Assembly Guides online we can provide more detailed and up to date information than the old hardcopy method allowed. |
